Aileen Henry has been a nurse for over a decade and has always enjoyed an active lifestyle including gardening, kayaking, and fishing. She had multiple stress fractures in her left foot the summer of 2022 and was put in a boot and told it should heal in 3-6 months. Unfortunately, it did not heal. Following multiple specialists, surgeries, and complications, it was deemed that amputation and a prosthetic was the option with the greatest odds of success in February 2025.
In Aileen's words:
"With support from my sons, my amazing boyfriend, family, friends, and of course GOD’s clear answer I made the decision to pursue a prosthetic leg. I had my left foot amputated February 26, 2025. I want my sons to know the more fun side to their mother. I want to be able to walk around my back yard and watch my son ride his bike. I want to take my son kayaking again and fishing. I want to enjoy traveling with my boyfriend. I want to be able to help others as a nurse and show them that it is possible to overcome hurdles and obstacles. I have faith that GOD has control, and I don’t know why but it is not up to me to understand the why. Just keep praising him and see all of the blessings in life like a boyfriend that will truly be there for you at your worst, children that give you something to fight for, and family that will bring you humor and laughter when you need it the most. I have learned so much on this path including that pain can absolutely change the person you are and how you see life, never trust a doctor blindly and always, always, always get a second opinion if a doctor wants to do surgery. I have learned to never take my mobility for granted and have been so humbled beyond belief by the generosity of people. All together I have had 5 surgeries. I have been non weight bearing over a year during the entire process. I have been in a boot or a cast over two years. I want my life back. I want my boys to enjoy spending time with me when I am not in pain. I really look forward to getting a prosthetic and getting my independence back. The goal is to be in prosthetic by late April 2025. I am beyond humbled and blessed to be the recipient of this benefit. I pray that I can pay it forward to someone else that is in need and help others that are looking at potentially the same difficulties I have had to face."
